Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has once again demonstrated its commitment to enhancing Dubai's water infrastructure by commissioning a new water reservoir in Enkhali. This significant addition, with a storage capacity of 120 million imperial gallons (MIG), cost AED 287.8 million and is now integrated into Dubai's water network.
The new reservoir is a strategic move to support DEWA's overarching goal of increasing water storage capacity in Dubai. Speaking on the occasion, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted the importance of water security as a national priority for the UAE. The UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 aims to ensure sustainable access to water during both normal and emergency conditions, addressing long-term water security challenges.
Al Tayer elaborated that the Enkhali reservoir, along with other reservoirs in Lusaily, Hassyan, and Hatta, will significantly enhance the efficiency and reliability of Dubai's water networks. These reservoirs are expected to increase water flow and the volume of water reserves to meet the growing demand and support the sustainable development of Dubai. Upon completion, the storage capacity will reach 1121.3 MIG of desalinated water, a substantial increase from the current capacity of 1001.3 MIG.
Additionally, these reservoirs complement DEWA's Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project for desalinated water. The first phase of the ASR project has already been completed, and once fully operational by 2025, it will be capable of storing up to 6,000 million imperial gallons of water. This makes it the largest ASR project globally for storing potable water and retrieving it during emergencies.
Abdullah Obaidullah, Executive Vice President of Water and Civil at DEWA, assured that the Enkhali reservoir adheres to the highest international standards, underscoring DEWA's commitment to quality and reliability.
