Empower Hosts UNEP Technical Study Tour on District Cooling in Dubai

Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation PJSC (Empower), the world's largest district cooling services provider, recently played host to a significant technical study tour organized by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The event, held on the 15th and 17th of July, 2024, brought together high-level delegates from the Governments of Tunisia, the Kingdom of Morocco, and the State Government of Punjab of Pakistan, with funding support from the Government of Italy.

The study tour, conducted under the UNEP-led Cool Coalition initiative, featured a series of workshops, training, and discussion sessions on district cooling in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. These sessions saw active participation from representatives of UNEP, Empower's management team led by CEO His Excellency Ahmad bin Shafar, and virtual contributions from Rob Thornton, President and CEO of the International District Energy Association (IDEA). Additionally, representatives from the COP28 UAE Presidency team were present.

The discussions during the tour focused on the challenges and opportunities that will shape the future of the district cooling industry. Participants explored innovative and pioneering solutions that promise to transform this vital sector. A highlight of the tour was a field visit to Empower's district cooling plant in Dubai's Business Bay area, where attendees were briefed on the practical operations of district cooling plants and the integration of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies.

Lily Riahi, Program Manager at UNEP and Global Lead of the Cool Coalition, highlighted the significance of district cooling technology, stating, 'District cooling is a critical technology for delivering affordable, efficient, and renewable cooling.'
